Welcome to the second instalment of Campus Wallflowers, Hating the Player! Just like always, this book can be read as a standalone, but I’d highly recommend diving into the whole series to get the full experience. This time, we’re exploring a different group of athletes—but how will this shake out for our gang of wallflowers?
After getting a glimpse of the complicated past between Gavin and Violet and the vitriolic state of their relationship, this story delivers more angst, plenty of push and pull, and ample drama. I was so curious to uncover what really happened between them—and whether Rebecca could actually redeem Gavin, even though I logically knew there had to be more to the story. And even more, could Violet forgive him? She showed no signs of wanting—or even caring—to understand what led to the heartbreak she experienced.
But leave it to Rebecca to set the stage perfectly: a little forced proximity, a persistent hero, and tender moments of vulnerability create just the right opportunities for these two to confront their past and navigate their unresolved feelings.
“I know we can’t start over, but can we try and move forward?”
Gavin 🏀🏀
Gavin Leonard is Valley U’s basketball captain, living next door to all the other gorgeous, popular star athletes in the top party house on campus. Over time, they’ve all learned to stay on their own side of the fence… until now.
Violet 👗👗
Violet Johnson is a college student living off-campus with her three best friends. She’s a fashion design major at Valley University who loves Jane Austen and creating her own dresses. Since her last heartbreak, she hasn’t dated much, and things could get complicated—especially since her ex is also her neighbour. Naturally, she does her best to avoid him… but some things aren’t so easy to escape.
Then Violet agrees to a fun weekend mountain getaway with her cousin and friends—but things quickly take a turn. She finds herself stuck on a couple’s camping trip with Gavin. They’re the only two single people, and there’s only one tent. Gavin wasn’t even supposed to be on the trip, but now he’s everywhere she turns.
Since Gavin cheated on Vi a year ago, Violet has tried to avoid him—but no matter how hard she resists, she’s still drawn to him. He makes her feel too much, when all she wants is to be angry. Can she stay away from him for the next forty-eight hours, or will his charm convince her to give them another chance?
💭💭💭
Well, what can I say about Hating the Player? I loved every second of it. I couldn’t wait to start this book, and the second-chance aspect of the story was everything I needed. Seeing such a strong woman realize that she can pursue her own happiness—and that giving someone a second chance doesn’t make her weak—was so satisfying. I can’t wait to see how these two continue to develop throughout the next books in the series!
